short answer
If you already buy LEGO from LEGO.com or a LEGO Store, yes: joining costs nothing and the points come to about 5% back (for example $200 spent earns 1,300 points, which is $10 off in the US). The catches are the minimum to redeem, the 18-month expiry, and that points only count at LEGO's own stores.
I built the calculator on this site to answer one question: what are my points actually worth? The next question is usually whether the points are worth bothering with at all. Here's my take, using the same numbers the calculator uses.
What the points give back
LEGO publishes how many points you earn per dollar (or pound, euro and so on) and how many points you need for a discount. Divide one by the other and you get the same answer in every region:
- US: you earn 6.5 points per $1, and 130 points give $1 off. 6.5 ÷ 130 = 5%
- UK: 8 per £1, 160 points per £1. 8 ÷ 160 = 5%
- Eurozone: 7.5 per €1, 150 points per €1. 7.5 ÷ 150 = 5%
- Canada: 5 per C$1, 100 points per C$1. 5 ÷ 100 = 5%
- Australia: 4.5 per A$1, 90 points per A$1. 4.5 ÷ 90 = 5%
So a $200 order earns 1,300 points, which is worth about $10 (1,300 points). The 130-points-per-dollar figure is my calculation from LEGO's published minimum (650 points for $5), so check your cart for the exact discount on bigger balances.
It costs nothing to join
LEGO says in its launch announcement that it doesn't cost anything to be a member. You have to be 18 or over. If you buy from LEGO.com or a LEGO Store anyway, there isn't much reason not to sign up. How to join.
The catches
- A minimum to redeem. LEGO sets one smallest discount per region, for example 650 points for $5 in the US or 800 points for £5 in the UK. Points below that can't be used yet. All five regions.
- They can expire. Points expire if you go 18 months without earning or redeeming any. How that works.
- Only LEGO's own stores count. Purchases at other retailers and at LEGO Certified Stores (yellow flag) don't earn points. If another retailer sells the set for less, compare the final price rather than counting the 5% as automatic.
- One reward per order, and codes last 60 days. Redemption problems.
- You can't give points away. Transfers aren't allowed.
Ways to build the balance faster
Registering the sets you already own earns 20 points each. LEGO also runs double points promotions now and then. Both are covered in Does LEGO offer more VIP points?.
