How to make a Lego mosaic from a photo

  1. Choose a photo. Pick one with a clear subject and good light. Faces and pets work best when they fill most of the frame.
  2. Frame it. Drag the picture and zoom in until your subject fills the square.
  3. Pick a size and colors. For a portrait, 64 × 64 studs and 16 colors is a good place to start.
  4. Download. Save the mosaic as a PNG and the parts list as a CSV, then start building.

What size should your Lego mosaic be?

A stud is about 8 mm wide, so the grid size sets both how big the mosaic is and how much detail it can show.

48 × 482,304about 38 cmPets and small portraits

How many bricks do you need?

Each square in the mosaic is one stud, so the number of studs is the number of 1 × 1 pieces you would need. The parts list tells you how many of each color. More colors look closer to your photo, but you will need more kinds of bricks, and some colors may only be used a handful of times. To see the real colors, have a look at the LEGO Pick a Brick shop.

Photos that work well (and ones that don't)

  • Portraits: go for a close-up with the eyes visible and a plain background. Strong shadows across the face are hard to read at this size, which matters for any Lego portrait generator.
  • Pets: a big, clear face against a simple background.
  • Pixel art and logos: try 32 × 32 with 8 colors for a clean, flat look. It also works as a quick Lego pixel art generator for icons and game characters.
  • Tricky photos: dark shots, crowded scenes and tiny faces. Zoom in on your subject, add some contrast, or go for a bigger size.

Tips for building your mosaic

  • Build on a baseplate that is at least as wide as your mosaic.
  • Sort your bricks by color first, using the parts list.
  • Work one row at a time, and step back every few rows to check the picture.
  • The colors on your screen are close to real bricks, but not exact. Hold a few bricks up to the screen before you buy.

Mosaic generator vs LEGO Art sets

LEGO Art sets come with one fixed picture and the exact bricks for it. Here you use your own photo and choose the size and colors, but you have to get the bricks yourself. This is an independent tool, not something made or approved by the LEGO Group.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes, and there is no sign-up. This free Lego mosaic maker works online in any modern browser.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, so your photo stays on your device.

How many bricks will I need?

One 1 × 1 piece for every square. A 64 × 64 mosaic is 4,096 studs, and the parts list breaks that down by color.

Which size should I choose?

Try 64 × 64 for portraits, 48 × 48 for pets, and 32 × 32 for icons, logos and pixel art.

Will the colors match real bricks?

Close, but not exactly. Check the shades of real bricks before you buy.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. You can take a photo or pick one from your gallery. iPhone HEIC photos need to be shared as a JPG first.

What file formats can I use?

JPG, PNG and WebP, up to 10 MB.
